This training is LONG overdue.
Nobody ever teaches players or coaches what to look for when picking up the other team's signs or the pitcher's "tells".
The older players (college and above) are more nuanced, but the younger pitchers are TELEGRAPHING their pitches.
And people say that one of the most important traits good hitters share is their ability to "swing at strikes"....but I feel that's worded wrong.
Hitters who will have long-term success at high levels don't just "swing at strikes"; everyone does that. What they do is have a great ability to "lay off of the balls off the plate".
Imagine the value of knowing a curve is coming on any count...let's say 1-1. Instead of chasing that ball off the plate, you take it. You magically changed a 1-2 count into a 2-1 count. The league-wide batting average on 1-2 counts in the MLB was .166. The average on 2-1 counts is .344.
THAT'S ALMOST 200 POINTS.
So knowing one pitch, the ability to NOT be fooled just once a game, let alone once an AB, is a career-changing ability.
